You are in "*g.MSATClayArt:1" ( )

auntyalias: Log # 3
auntyalias: just for my reference
auntyalias: I'm almost done with my sandwich so if there's any
requests, make them while I chew
bonsaikathy: I'm working on some lillies now
techi_mom56: me too...the yellow ones that are native to the northwest
auntyalias: coolness, I'd love to see shots
auntyalias: I'm thinking of a blue and white blend
auntyalias: going to check that google image link in the log
techi_mom56: ohh...i saw one on that search you posted
auntyalias: Gosh there's just so many of them
auntyalias: we can do anything we want really, thin petals, fat petals
auntyalias: from blue to purple to pink to white
bonsaikathy: I know, I love google images
auntyalias: with and without yellow centers to the flowers
auntyalias: I think we can stand to have more petals than I got on
these clay lilies here
auntyalias: I should get a One Tile Tute shot of these before making
another one
auntyalias: for those who are making lilies and who have a cam, could
you open your cams so Roni can see something while I get these digi
pix up on the site?
techi_mom56: k...will take a few minutes...
bonsaikathy: Me too
auntyalias: thanks gals, Roni can learn from y'all too
Roni: thank you all, this should be fun
bonsaikathy: welcome honey
techi_mom56: this the one i am trying to do...
http://www.stockpix.com/stock/travel/usa/oregon/8541.jpg
bonsaikathy: that's really pretty nancy
meows3xx left the room
Roni (meows3xx) joined the room
Roni: back, darn puter locked up
bonsaikathy: I sent you an invite Roni
Roni: got Kathy webcam
bonsaikathy: I have to add more lillies to the fountain
Roni: looks great, a bunch of water lillies in the pond
bonsaikathy: also have to add a little dimension to the pond on the
right
Roni: is that real water
bonsaikathy: no, it's resin and on the back it's clear seal by liquid
nails
bonsaikathy: the water fall part
Roni: wow, looks like water flowing down the rocks
Roni: and are those fish in the water?
bonsaikathy: it works great as a waterfall and is perfectly clear
bonsaikathy: koi fish
bonsaikathy: i have a cheap cam and it's hard to get the lighting
right on it for things to show up good
Roni: I'm totally impressed, you do good work
bonsaikathy: well thanks honey, been doing mini's for over 15 years
Roni: don't tip it too far, the water will run out and the fish will
die LOL
techi_mom56: oh kathy that is so neat...
bonsaikathy: lol
Roni: now I've got techi's cam on too woohoo, hope Yahoo is good to me
not lock up
bonsaikathy: it does like to lock people up sometimes when they get to
many open
bonsaikathy: I don't usually have that problem but we have a really
fast computer
techi_mom56: yeah and XP helps too....i dont get many lockups i cant
get out of anymore
bonsaikathy: we got lucky today and found a lazer printer at the
goodwill store for only 10$
bonsaikathy: it's working too
Roni: mines a pentium 3 but it has a hard drive problem, was supposed
to call service today but hubby had to call a plumber, oh well
bonsaikathy: Hewlett Packard
techi_mom56: okay roni..this is the blend i did for the green part of
the flower
bonsaikathy: Nany it's looking good
auntyalias: ../../../Flowers/WaterLily/Index.htm
Roni: how lucky, you can print your own pics for transfers
bonsaikathy: this is black and white
bonsaikathy: we also have an epson color printer
Roni: thanks NJ, but I can't click on the link right now, last time
thats what locked me up
auntyalias: no worries, it's for the log too
auntyalias: so you can check back later
auntyalias: brb
Roni: k
techi_mom56: i cut some green circles to use for the leaves the wrap
around the flowers before they open up...the yellow is a yellow and
trans blend
bonsaikathy: NJ when did you do the peach colored ones
techi_mom56: that is a 1" grid on the desktop
Roni: techi what do you have your flower resting on?
bonsaikathy: that's a great idea matter of fact
techi_mom56: going to use the little cutter...laugh a empty pill
bottle...
bonsaikathy: hey whatever works
techi_mom56: yup recycle/reuse...and they are number 5 plastic
techi_mom56: i am overlapping the cut a little
techi_mom56: and stretching the clay to cup it....
bonsaikathy: sorry can't work under the lights, it's making the clay
way to warm
Roni: okay
techi_mom56: okay the center..is yellew and green scrap blended...the
leaves are cupped around it...
auntyalias: Sorry I was loading up the Water Lily Index page, what
peach ones Kathy?
techi_mom56: i cant remember exactly how the center looks so i am
going to guess at it...a very techinical way to make it......
auntyalias: ../../../Flowers/WaterLily/Index.htm
auntyalias: linked the Blue Nile Lotus and the mini lotus in the koi
pond from 1999 on this page, because they are built similarly
techi_mom56: excuse me i had to remove my assistant....
techi_mom56: laugh
techi_mom56: i just use a skewer to poke holes in the center...
Roni: have to run, dinner is really late today, as usuall, thanks
everyone
meows3xx left the room
auntyalias: Gosh just as I was about to do the Blue Nile Lotus
auntyalias: ah well
techi_mom56 left the room
techi_mom56 joined the room
techi_mom56: got booted...
techi_mom56: reset the cam position
auntyalias: O
auntyalias: ok
auntyalias: I mean
auntyalias: I'm starting on the blue nile lotus
auntyalias: Wow
auntyalias: that's not a mini
auntyalias: very pretty, is that the kind of water lily that grows up
around your neck of the woods?
techi_mom56: actually sort of...
techi_mom56: yes..wild ones..
techi_mom56: they are about twice that big
techi_mom56: and boy you DONT want to get a fish hook snagged in the
stalk....
auntyalias: they are rooted very well I take it
techi_mom56: very thick tough stalks....
techi_mom56: did you see the link i found of a pic of them on a
lake...
auntyalias: I'm getting a glare from the afternoon sun, got to close
my curtains
beccas1963 joined the room
auntyalias: ../../../Flowers/WaterLily/Index.htm
techi_mom56: the little one is about 1/2" sized...
auntyalias: Welcome Bec, right click on AuntyAlias where you see that
TV Icon to open my cam
techi_mom56: the big one is a smidge over 1"...
techi_mom56: hi beca...welcome..
auntyalias: Bec I sent you an invite to see my cam and you declined
it?
beccas1963: Hello
auntyalias: makes it hard to show you these water lilies
auntyalias: I'll send you an invite for my cam again
beccas1963: I did?
techi_mom56: my name is nancy
An Invitation to view your Webcam was sent to beccas1963 (5/19/03 3:42
PM)
beccas1963: I am in there
bonsaikathy: HI Bec
bonsaikathy: you made it
auntyalias: Yeah
beccas1963: Yeah how late am I?
auntyalias: ok, that link I sent through, I'll send it again
auntyalias: ../../../Flowers/WaterLily/Index.htm
auntyalias: That's the logs and the digital pictures of the demo so
far
auntyalias: we're working on our third water lily
beccas1963: ok
auntyalias: I'll make another stalk so you can see how it is done, the
yellow to green ribbon is a blend and that's one of the basic
techniques you'll learn
bonsaikathy: NJ is helping me with water lillies for my fountain
auntyalias: I'm going to do a blend of blue/purple and pearl
auntyalias: for the blue nile lotus
techi_mom56: the pads for this kind are not round...
auntyalias: or something close to it
auntyalias: so you'll see a blend for the flower petal
auntyalias: Let's do a roll call, Name and Location
auntyalias: NoraJean, San Francisco
beccas1963: Beccas Iowa
techi_mom56: nancy..clatskanie oregon (near Portland)
bonsaikathy: Kathy in E. TN
frogger70301: Mitch, LA
beccas1963: So you are making that yellow and green item at the bottom
of the web cam
auntyalias: Ok, I'm going to do this purple to pearl with a bit of
blue in it blend
techi_mom56: kathy my clay was soft too...warm in here...
techi_mom56: NJ is cutting the blend into strips..
beccas1963: why did she do that?
techi_mom56: layed the blend on the pearl and cut long triangles to
make a blend with..
techi_mom56: do you know how to do a skinner type blend
auntyalias:
Blends
techi_mom56: the colors will blend together
beccas1963: hmmm
techi_mom56: that is the best tutorial on it...
techi_mom56: she has the quickest easiest one..and a "no pasta
machine" version too...thank god!
beccas1963: oh good I don't have one yet
techi_mom56: then you will love it....i didnt for a long time either
beccas1963: why does she roll it like that?
auntyalias: here's how you do it without a pasta press
auntyalias: dig
techi_mom56: nj are you twisting or just compressing?
beccas1963: So many questions... But it is fasinating
auntyalias: I jelly roll, flatten, twist, compress and pull
techi_mom56: don't be afraid to ask away...
beccas1963: I'll just watch for now.
auntyalias: to get the middle of the flower and the stalk, you do a
blend with yellow going to darker shades of green
auntyalias: blends are blends
auntyalias: you seen one then you can do a million
auntyalias: just change the colors
beccas1963: oh ok that is what that is. Thanks.
auntyalias: now cut off a length of floral wire twice the length of
your water lily stalk
jude (greatauntjudy) joined the room
techi_mom56: laugh..thats what mine needed...
auntyalias: ../../../Flowers/WaterLily/Index.htm
auntyalias: Here Aunt Jude
auntyalias: catch up stuff
jude: Howdy!
jude: Okie.
jude: Water Lilies, neat!
auntyalias: I took that length of floral wire, bent it in half
auntyalias: then twisted it leaving a loop for the top
auntyalias: that's an anchor for the clay at the center of the flower
auntyalias: I'll cut off a bit of this yellow to green blended ribbon
and cover that wire, leaving the top yellow part sort of like a stubby
cone shape, thin out the rest of the shaft
frogger70301 left the room
auntyalias: now it looks like the wire is twice as long as the clay
auntyalias: that's only because the clay isn't rolled down the wire
and thinned
beccas1963: ummm where did the purple go?
auntyalias: it's coming up, it's set aside while we do the center and
the stalk
beccas1963: oh ok
auntyalias: if we left the center like this it would look a bit plain,
so we'll poke the top of it with a wire, and score the outside of it
going in an upward stroke
auntyalias: see that tool there?
beccas1963: The metal thing?
auntyalias: That's a leaf cutter, plunger type, so we're going to cut
out leaf shapes from that purple blend,
auntyalias: Yes, that's called a Kemper Tool, they come in all sorts
of shapes and sizes
beccas1963: cool
auntyalias: I use the leaf shape all the time
jude: I love using the leaf shapes for things.
beccas1963: how do you use it?
auntyalias: so even though we could use the ribbon hand pulled I'm
going to press it to get it as uniform as I can, since I do have a
pasta press
jude: You use it like a cookie cutter.
jude: Roll out the clay and cut.
beccas1963: thanks Jude
jude:
techi_mom56: okay i am back...
beccas1963: what she doing now?
beccas1963: oh I see
auntyalias: each of these petals need to be stretched and in so doing
they get narrow
auntyalias: then they get attached to the center of the flower going
around
beccas1963: how do you stretch them?
auntyalias: now there's this sequence of numbers, the Fibunacci series
auntyalias: http://www.cs.uwm.edu/~scottk/JavaClass/spiral.html
auntyalias: it's a mathematical thing you see in plants, the breeding
habits of bunnies, how fractals work
auntyalias: we'll be exploring that more as we go on for petal and
leaf placement
auntyalias: for now, we're going to start with four petals in the
first row closest to the center and work out laying on the seams of
the rows that went before
auntyalias: I'll show you how to stretch these petals, you lay one on
the tip of your little finger
auntyalias: pressing the fat part of the leaf around the round of your
finger tip
auntyalias: then
auntyalias: pull the pointy part of the leaf, the bowled bit will
stick to your finger and that causes the stretch
beccas1963: hmmmm
auntyalias: saving the log, take a minute
auntyalias: ok back
techi_mom56: kathy i have figured out one thing...warm clay and mini
are a challange
bonsaikathy: yup
bonsaikathy: agreed
bonsaikathy: that's why I had to turn off the cam
bonsaikathy: it's was getting to hot under the lights
auntyalias: now you all know what I go through here all the time, eh
auntyalias: LOL
auntyalias: the evil laugh
bonsaikathy: yup
beccas1963: Do you try to make them all the same size?
techi_mom56: laugh...yup..i havent done much in mini
auntyalias: God Willing
auntyalias: there's variations but since they are all the same leaf
cut out
auntyalias: they can only stretch so far
auntyalias: so when you're forming it over your finger
auntyalias: and pulling it
auntyalias: you set limits for yourself, like pull as far as the hang
nail
beccas1963: ok I get you.
auntyalias: that sort of thing
techi_mom56: these are kind of the ugly ducklings of the water
lillys...the little green glob on the stick is what the buds look like
beccas1963: ok it is like shingling a roof you cover the seams with
petals.
auntyalias: I can't get that light color to show up right
auntyalias: hold on
auntyalias: there it is
bonsaikathy: what a pretty color NJ
auntyalias: it's making me crazy
auntyalias: I keep on loosing the lighter color in the blend with the
lighting problems
beccas1963: It looks great
bonsaikathy: I have the same problem when I do the webcam
bonsaikathy: but it's really pretty anyway
beccas1963: I see it
bonsaikathy: hold it in the middle and I'll get a shot for you
auntyalias: there
beccas1963: Question: what do you do with the rest of the stem? If it
is going to be in "water"
bonsaikathy: I did mine without a stem just for that reason
auntyalias: that's as close as it's going to be fore the color
beccas1963: oh ok
auntyalias: there
auntyalias: jeese louise was that a pill to accomplish or what, the
cam adjustments took longer than the flower
beccas1963: So lets pretend I understand all this.  I could do this
for roses?
auntyalias: just turn the petal around
auntyalias: pointy end down
auntyalias: fat part up
auntyalias: wanna see?
beccas1963: ummm sure
auntyalias: let me close the curtains and I'll show you with the same
blend
techi_mom56: brb
techi_mom56: okay i am going to leave the cam on...i did make a pad
for it (sort of)..
auntyalias: For the bud, you take one petal and roll it around the end
of the stem side ways, like a flag
buci131 joined the room
techi_mom56: going to go fix some dinner...
auntyalias: Yo Eva
auntyalias: we were doing water lilies and segued to Roses
buci131: Hiya
auntyalias: ../../../Flowers/WaterLily/Index.htm
buci131: Just popped in to say hi and see what's going on--can't stay
long
buci131: Oh yes, I went thru the Epson album on the white lily--really
terrific
auntyalias: I gave the blue nile lotus an effort
buci131: really cool
buci131: are you planning on doing the pads with them?
buci131: or do they have pads normally?
auntyalias: Just wrestling the water lilies to the floor first
auntyalias: make them cry uncle
buci131: heehee
auntyalias: Showing Bec basic roses
auntyalias: turning the leaf shape upside down from the water lily
auntyalias: water lily is pointy end of leaf out
auntyalias: roses are pointy end of the leaf in
beccas1963: Do you stretch it?
auntyalias: take the leaf shape and make it a rose petal shape
beccas1963: you bend it then
dahs512 joined the room
auntyalias: you know what a rose petal looks like so yes, stretch the
leaf shape to fit then after you put it on the stem, crimp the top of
the petal
beccas1963: okey dokey
dahs512: I'm back but I don't know for how long
auntyalias: ../../../Flowers/WaterLily/Index.htm
auntyalias: got digi pix
dahs512: Keegan got sick on the way to scouts
auntyalias: I'm sorry to hear that
auntyalias: he throwing up and stuff?
auntyalias: something he ate?
dahs512: I'm doing shim poi poi duty
dahs512: good
dahs512: I thought car sick +allergies
dahs512: I don't know
dahs512: not much
buci131: NJ, that pink and white lily is really nice
dahs512: Are you doing roses?
beccas1963: yup I forced her to show me
dahs512: they are sooo tiny
auntyalias: I'm showing Bec that roses have the fat part of the leaf
shape going outward
dahs512: What a good job
auntyalias: where as the petals for the water lily are turned around
auntyalias: with the pointy bits outward
auntyalias: the rose petal fat leaf side is stretched to make it a
rose petal shape
auntyalias: the pointy end of the leaf shape is pulled to get that
water lily look
auntyalias: both coming from the same leaf cutter tool
claychik joined the room
dahs512: Thse pics are great NJ
auntyalias: Hey Sharon
auntyalias: ../../../Flowers/WaterLily/Index.htm
claychik: hi all!
auntyalias: here's the catch up
claychik: ooo, nice flowers!
beccas1963: I just love all this demoing it helps tremendously.
auntyalias: doesn't it though, then you can see it ain't all that hard
auntyalias: seeing it done
auntyalias: rather than reading it and only seeing still shots
beccas1963: yup but that is good too.
auntyalias: better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick
auntyalias: that's for sure
jude: Sure is!
claychik: omg just saw matrix reloaded
beccas1963: Question: when you bake them do you put something on the
tray to keep the flowers kind of up?
jude: I use bits of wood, but you can use almost anything.
auntyalias: I wad up a bit of aluminum foil
jude: Some use cotton balls.
auntyalias: and jam them in there
auntyalias: undelicately
auntyalias: LOL
jude: GASP!
auntyalias: LOL
jude: Hehehehe
auntyalias: clay abuse
auntyalias: once again
jude: Right.
jude: There you go again.
auntyalias: I want to show all of you how to do a quick cala lily
auntyalias: ok?
beccas1963: ok so prop them up right?
beccas1963: sure
dahs512: ok
jude: Cala lilies are really simple to do.
claychik left the room
dahs512: Nancy is making flowers too
beccas1963: she is using another cookie cutter right?
jude: Looks like it, yes.
dahs512: a circle
jude: Leaf pattern again.
beccas1963: oh ok
jude: I use mine a lot for flower petals.
dahs512: only a bigger one
dahs512: easy breezy
jude: Yes. I have various sizes and use the all.
beccas1963: that is pretty
auntyalias: and pretty easy too
jude: The stem is very easy to fashion. I rolled mine over sandpaper
to get the texture.
auntyalias: that's a good idea Jude
jude: I cured mine first, too.
jude: I have a problem with pinching and poking things. So will do
things in stages if I can.
beccas1963: well folks it has been real fun I got to go now. Will come
again if it is ok.
dahs512: sure, the more ther merrier
auntyalias: Any Time Bec
auntyalias: I'm going to save this log at this point since we're at a
logical break
beccas1963: ok let me know if there is a newbie to clay demo like what
all I have to have and all that stuff.
beccas1963: Massive Hugs to all.
beccas1963 left the room
buci131: I gotta go--daughter's looking for attention and it's time to put her to bed anyway.
auntyalias: Ok Eva
dahs512: nite Eva
auntyalias: sorry I couldn't show you the water lily
bonsaikathy: Bye Eva
dahs512: I'm gonna do some little flowers
buci131: Oh that's fine, the screen shots in Epson are great
auntyalias: thanks to Denise
dahs512: see if i can catch up
buci131: Later all--thanks for the demo, NJ
auntyalias: I'm winding down now myself
buci131 left the room
jude: Night Eva, hope she gets better.
auntyalias: I got to get dinner started and do some chores around here
bonsaikathy: thanks for the help on the water Lilly NJ
dahs512: ok Nj it was nice seeing you for a bit
auntyalias: there's still some shots of the third water lily to capture and those pages to build
dahs512: we will catch you on the flip side
auntyalias: ya, it was good to be back, going out with James is nice but I do miss my demo days
dahs512: the pics you got were real nice
auntyalias: thanks, I'll get some of this one too, the light color doesn't show up very well here
auntyalias: so thanks for coming and I'd best get off to do those pix
jude: Okie, great demo today.
dahs512: I think I'll make a carmen flower girl
dahs512: later gaters
bonsaikathy: bye Denise
jude: Take care all!
dahs512 left the room
bonsaikathy: NJ just sent you 4 shots of the blue Lilly
bonsaikathy: Bye Jude
auntyalias: great I'll get them up,
auntyalias: xoxo
