Clay Techniques-02

Aluminum Foil Armature

Fearless Leader: ok, I'll pull out the foil
Fearless Leader: and I'm going to break it into one foot long
sections
Fearless Leader: which will then be cut down to three sections four
inches wide
Fearless Leader: Biz-Archive/Sculpt/AluminumFoil/Armature-01c
Fearless Leader: if you get foil pop up sheets
Fearless Leader: they are creased exactly where you need to cut
Fearless Leader: the sheet
Fearless Leader: to make one length of the armature
Fearless Leader: pretty handy if you can get those
Fearless Leader: I just pulled 6 sheets
Fearless Leader: and I'll fold them lightly in to thirds
Fearless Leader: and then cut along those creases
Fearless Leader: then I'll compress the foil
Fearless Leader: don't twist it
merrie60us: so weight of foil does not matter
Fearless Leader: it will get un twisted when you sculpt
Fearless Leader: I just bargin brand everything
Fearless Leader: I'm cheap that way
Fearless Leader: if you hands are tender
Fearless Leader: use garden gloves for this part
Fearless Leader: I did ten in a row
Fearless Leader: and my hands were tender afterward
Fearless Leader: fyi
Fearless Leader: compress like that
Fearless Leader: going inward and then tighten
merrie60us: she mooshed the foil and then undid the moosh so itis all
wrinkled
Fearless Leader: I'm going to do a mess of them now
merrie60us: squishing foil
Fearless Leader: I rolled them between open palms
Fearless Leader: but that does make your hands tender
Fearless Leader: so take care
Fearless Leader: ok
merrie60us: three thin rolls of foil like logs
Fearless Leader: now we will bend two of these in to loose U shapes
Fearless Leader: Biz-Archive/Sculpt/AluminumFoil/Armature-01d
Fearless Leader: open this page please
Fearless Leader: the two U shapes are linked and then the top one
twisted
merrie60us: shows foil x
Fearless Leader: twist it a couple of times, that's is the spine
Fearless Leader: now we add another length of twisted foil
Fearless Leader: to make the arms,
Fearless Leader: what's sticking out like that are shoulders
merrie60us: twisting more foil making arms
Fearless Leader: when you bend arms
merrie60us: attached to shoulders
Fearless Leader: leave room for shoulders
Fearless Leader: and under arm space
Fearless Leader: folks forget it a lot
Fearless Leader: and their dolls
Fearless Leader: look
Fearless Leader: cramped
Fearless Leader: like in a crowded elevator
Fearless Leader: put your elbows to your side
Fearless Leader: where does the elbow line up with
Fearless Leader: mine is just above my waist
Fearless Leader: just short of my belt line
Fearless Leader: where do your elbows line up?
merrie60us: at waist
merrie60us: fingertips at mid thigh
Fearless Leader: Folks often
Fearless Leader: bend the arm
Fearless Leader: too low
Fearless Leader: on the doll body
Fearless Leader: this armature already looks human
Fearless Leader: the arms are the right length
Fearless Leader: the legs to torso
Fearless Leader: where the arms bend
Fearless Leader: this one is about to run away
Fearless Leader: keep on trucking
Fearless Leader: you can practice poses when the armature is at this
point
Fearless Leader: Biz-Archive/Sculpt/AluminumFoil/Armature-01e
Fearless Leader: like this one
Fearless Leader: now let's add a head to this
Fearless Leader: by taking half a sheet, ball it up, take the other
half a sheet and use it to attach the head, make the neck and connect
it with the shoulders
Fearless Leader: Biz-Archive/Sculpt/AluminumFoil/Armature-03a
Fearless Leader: this is the page for the head attachment
Fearless Leader: make sure you give room for the neck at this point
Fearless Leader: before putting it on the body
Fearless Leader: another common error with new doll makers
Fearless Leader: no neck
tedi382001 left the room
Fearless Leader: I'll take questions now
merrie60us: Do you just squish the head on
chelyha: You're making it clear. No ? from me at this point
Fearless Leader: The head is a compressed ball of half sheet of clay
Fearless Leader: the neck is compressed
Fearless Leader: and then that neck is fitted on the shoulders
Fearless Leader: and that butterfly bit of foil
Fearless Leader: is then wrapped around the shoulders and torso
Fearless Leader: so the head isn't smashed down in any way
Fearless Leader: or it will break the neck
merrie60us: okay
Fearless Leader: now I'll take the sheets I did earlier
Fearless Leader: and use leaf shaped kemper tools to cut out skin
Fearless Leader: I use the leaf shape because it fits in the nooks
and crannies of the body
Fearless Leader: that's the first layer
Fearless Leader: then the second layer of leaf shapes
Fearless Leader: gives us muscle definition
Fearless Leader: Good place to save the text
Fearless Leader: since we're moving on to the next step
Fearless Leader: I'll get the new url
frogger70301: NJ, I figured out the screen shots!
Fearless Leader: Biz-Archive/Sculpt/DoMySelf/Tisha-Grp
Fearless Leader: Wow coolness
Fearless Leader: wanna share?
merrie60us: I sent first section of log
Fearless Leader: Merrie copy this up and just mail it to me,
antalias@pacbell.net
Fearless Leader: and I'll put it on the site
Fearless Leader: thanks honey,
Fearless Leader: Mitch how did you do the screen shots?
frogger70301: I went to My photo editor, and under File there is an
option to capture.
merrie60us: oops sent to yahoo sorry
Fearless Leader: ooops a poopsa
Fearless Leader: LOL
frogger70301: I clicked on that and a box came up with places to
choose from, I picked my desktop, then ok.
Fearless Leader: well it's as good as posting that there's a demo
going on
Fearless Leader: gosh, Mitch
Fearless Leader: your photo editor?
frogger70301: ArcSoft PhotoStudio
Fearless Leader: gosh, PhotoShop has nothing I can find like that,
I'll have to check out the other graphics packages I have
Fearless Leader: good going honey
Fearless Leader: when you can, share with the list how it is done
frogger70301: And this while I'm on drugs!
frogger70301:
Fearless Leader: so more will know, Ya and under the influence too
Fearless Leader: LOL
Fearless Leader: I'm going to change cam angles to do the skin on
this doll
Fearless Leader: oh hey
Fearless Leader: Kathy of ClayAlley is printing up my tutorials
Fearless Leader: and selling them one at a time
Fearless Leader: doing the printing and listing and sending
Fearless Leader: we're splitting half the proceeds
Fearless Leader: but we're keeping it cheap
Fearless Leader: like under $10, for a couple of tutes
Fearless Leader: but what I'd like to promote is Tute by demand
Fearless Leader: if someone only wants this one or that one, they can
order them, like ala cart
Fearless Leader: what do you think?
Fearless Leader: Sound interesting?
merrie60us: the written or pictures also
Fearless Leader: pix and text
Fearless Leader: what's on my site
Fearless Leader: but in print
merrie60us: good idea
Fearless Leader: she came up with it and I told her it made me tired
just thinking about it
Fearless Leader: she said
Fearless Leader: you won't feel a thing
Fearless Leader: LOL
Fearless Leader: good
Fearless Leader: My plate is full
tedi382001 joined the room
tedi382001: back
Fearless Leader: Amy, right?
Fearless Leader: folks give someone a greeting back
tedi382001: right
Fearless Leader: so they don't feel like it's a ghost town
Fearless Leader: you're hosts here too
frogger70301: I'm trying to get set up.
chelyha: Hi there!
frogger70301: Hey, boo.
merrie60us: HI how are you l left for a brief minute
chelyha: I'm rearranging beads while I am watching this. Sorry to
ignore you!
Fearless Leader: ok, shall I do another armature
Fearless Leader: real quick like
Fearless Leader: for review before putting skin on?
Fearless Leader: only take a minute
tedi382001: please
merrie60us: If you want
Fearless Leader: and you all can practice describing what you see
Fearless Leader: even if it's the first time you're seeing it
Fearless Leader: those comments are the best
Fearless Leader: for they hold discovery
Fearless Leader: and questions
Fearless Leader: and funny comments
Fearless Leader: ok?
merrie60us: yes
jakmiami joined the room
merrie60us: yes
merrie60us: oops
frogger70301: brb, gotta go put a movie in.
jakmiami: Judith here. Finally managed to get connected...
Fearless Leader: Jakamiami, who are you. I'm bad with yahoo id's
Fearless Leader: ah hey honey
tedi382001: ok so there are several sheets of foil, all the same
length?
Fearless Leader: get the cam going yet?
merrie60us: cut foil in half
Fearless Leader: Amy have you ever seen those foil pop ups?
Fearless Leader: in a box
Fearless Leader: like face tissue?
frogger70301: back
Fearless Leader: they are about a foot long and creased in two places
Fearless Leader: they are perfect for this
jakmiami: cam on!
Fearless Leader: just cut the creases
Fearless Leader: YEAH
Fearless Leader: ok, now
Fearless Leader: all the links have been sent through the list
Fearless Leader: refer to that
tedi382001: no I havent
Fearless Leader: to get to the still shots of this
Fearless Leader: pull out foil a foot long
Fearless Leader: then crease it so it's three sections
Fearless Leader: cut the crease
Fearless Leader: that's the sheet size
Fearless Leader: watch
Fearless Leader: ok, and describe what you see
tedi382001: ok
Fearless Leader: that's the only fee here
Fearless Leader: type
Fearless Leader: LOL
Fearless Leader: you are seeing a mirror image
Fearless Leader: by the way
Fearless Leader: do not be alarmed
Fearless Leader: there is nothing wrong with your cam image
frogger70301: if any of you want me to get a shot of something, let
me know.
Fearless Leader: shot what's interesting
tedi382001: thought it was my eyes
Fearless Leader: that's why I hipped you up
Fearless Leader: you didn't see Back Stage Pass?
Fearless Leader: the set up here?
jill_z_q joined the room
tedi382001: no
Fearless Leader:
Biz-Archive/MSAT/ClayArt/WebCam/Set-up
frogger70301: Hey, Suz.
Fearless Leader: check it out while I pull out sheets
jill_z_q: hi
Fearless Leader: Hey Suzy
Fearless Leader: doing it from the beginning again, can you see yet?
Fearless Leader:
teri56 joined the room
Fearless Leader: Teri
Fearless Leader: coolness
teri56: hi!
merrie60us: I have to log off for two minutes can someone save chat
while I am gone?
jill_z_q: no trying to figure it out
frogger70301: Hey, Teri.
teri56: I dunno how, else I would Merrie
frogger70301: I'll get it.
Fearless Leader:
Aluminum foil armature
Fearless Leader: Thank you Merrie and Mitch for a good hand off
merrie60us: Just do control a then control c then go to write mail
and do control v and send to NJ
Fearless Leader:
jill_z_q: brb
jill_z_q left the room
merrie60us: brb
merrie60us left the room
Fearless Leader: Ok, that link to the armature group
Fearless Leader: that's what we are reviewing
teri56: ok - got the page loaded - I reviewed it earlier
teri56: got it
Fearless Leader: and you are seeing a mirror image
teri56: ok
jakmiami: Okay...I've now got long skinny sheets of foil...should
they be skinny?
Fearless Leader: pull out a foot of foil, then fold it going along
the cut edge, so you have two creases, three sections, they should be
4 inches
Fearless Leader: at the short edge, which is the edge of the foil,
not the cut side, let me show you
Fearless Leader: not exact
Fearless Leader: like horse shoes and hand granades, close is good
enough
Fearless Leader: don't stress this stuff
Fearless Leader: to crease it I use my ruler
Fearless Leader: you can cut it here with a razor if you're up to it
Fearless Leader: other wise use sissors
Fearless Leader: the sheets stick together when you cut them, sort of
get mashed along the edge
Fearless Leader: so when you separate them
Fearless Leader: take care not to tear
Fearless Leader: like I do all the time
Fearless Leader: compress, don't twist
Fearless Leader: Biz-Archive/Sculpt/AluminumFoil/Armature-01c
jakmiami: Are we compressing one sheet at a time?
Fearless Leader: yes
Fearless Leader: the head
Fearless Leader: is one sheet cut in half
Fearless Leader: one half the ball
Fearless Leader: the other half the "hood" attachment
Fearless Leader: goes over the ball and attaches to the top of the
torso
Fearless Leader: but this is the page I want you to be on
frogger70301: shoot I forgot to put the shot # in there.
Fearless Leader: The Blair Witch Page
Fearless Leader: Biz-Archive/Sculpt/AluminumFoil/Armature-01d
Fearless Leader: Take two lengths
Fearless Leader: and bend in a U shape
Fearless Leader: that's your legs and hips
Fearless Leader: for one
Fearless Leader: and pelvis and torso for the other
Fearless Leader: we get that with a simple twist
frogger70301: shot 2
Fearless Leader: that twist is the spine
frogger70301: shot 3
Fearless Leader: Mitch
frogger70301: yeah.
Fearless Leader: did you get it lying down or standing up?
frogger70301: standing.
Fearless Leader: I'll stand it up for you
Fearless Leader: ATTA GIRL
Fearless Leader: you're so perfect
frogger70301: thnx.
Fearless Leader: ok, take the third length
Fearless Leader: and those little bits there
Fearless Leader: sticking out
Fearless Leader: those are your Shoulder Pads
Fearless Leader: like Mildred Pierce
Fearless Leader: shoulders for days
Fearless Leader: the third length is the arms
Fearless Leader: and collar bone I suppose you can say
Fearless Leader: "Where's my fricking head" the armature asks
Fearless Leader: let's help him get a head in life here
frogger70301: shot 3
Fearless Leader: 4
frogger70301: oh, sorry.
Fearless Leader: you're on pain meds
Fearless Leader: I'm just looking out for you
Fearless Leader: other folks can count too
Fearless Leader: and describe what's going on
teri56: I'll give it a shot for a while
teri56: NJ has the headless armature, just cut a new sheet of foil
linda_d_45419 joined the room
teri56: she's dividing that one like the first, into thirds
Fearless Leader: half
frogger70301: 5
teri56: whups
teri56: wrapping the aluminum ball (the head) in one of the halves
Fearless Leader: when your excess looks like a butterfly
Fearless Leader: you got enough neck
Fearless Leader: for the head
Fearless Leader: no butterfly
Fearless Leader: no neck
frogger70301: 6
teri56: gathered at the bottom of the ball, so it looks like a hood
frogger70301: 7
Fearless Leader: Biz-Archive/Sculpt/AluminumFoil/Armature-002
Fearless Leader: it's on this page
Fearless Leader: One sheet, cut in half
Fearless Leader: one half the ball for the head
Fearless Leader: one half the hood, of sorts
Fearless Leader: no butterfly, no neck
Fearless Leader: now we put it on the torso
merrie60us joined the room
Fearless Leader: and wrap the butterfly salvage around the chest and
back
merrie60us: Hi back
Fearless Leader: any questions up to this point, Hey Merrie
Fearless Leader: reviewing the armature
Fearless Leader: helping this figure get a head in life
merrie60us: is someone copying log
Fearless Leader: LOL
Fearless Leader: dunno
teri56: yuk yuk yuk
frogger70301: I am.
Fearless Leader: Help her with logs Merrie, if you could, she's doing
screen shots
merrie60us: I will copy for 15 then have to go and then will be back
son is sleeping away you know how it goes
frogger70301: Can we take a break for a sec?
Fearless Leader: sure
Fearless Leader: potty break
Fearless Leader: or shall we put his head on real quick
Fearless Leader: just take a second and then we can break
frogger70301: ok. sounds good.
teri56: wrapping the extra part of the "hood" around the shoulders
teri56: attaching the head to the body (thank goodness), and forming
the neck
frogger70301: 8
Fearless Leader: "I ...got a head, wow."
teri56: and now the armature is patting its head into place
jakmiami: did she unwrap the shoulder twist first?
Fearless Leader: the shoulder twist is the shoulder cap
Fearless Leader: we need the mass there
Fearless Leader: potty break and questions
