The Noppera-bō

Posted on May 8, 2026May 8, 2026 by Lord Grandma

The Noppera-bō, also known as the faceless ghost, is a prominent figure in Japanese folklore. It is a yōkai that resembles an ordinary human but has no face. This creature is known for its ability to scare people by revealing its true form, which is a blank, featureless visage. The Noppera-bō is often encountered at night and is known for its psychological terror rather than physical harm. It is a representation of various cultural phobias, including the fear of not being able to distinguish between one’s true feelings and public face. The facelessness of the Noppera-bō can be interpreted as a manifestation of identity crisis and fear of the unknown.” Wikipedia
