2004 Holiday Marathon

12-24-04-5: First layer of skin on the Male and filing cured figures.

Demo Stuff

You are in "*g.MSATClayArt:1" ( )

Fearless Leader: Fifth Log, and good time for a break
rjchase222: Yes Momma! :)
Fearless Leader: I'll take questions if there are any
at this point
Fearless Leader: yikes a bunch of type just
disappeared
Fearless Leader: Yahoo is so weird
Susan (minimoon47) joined the room
Susan:
Fearless Leader: are there any questions at this point
of the process? I'm going to mix a different batch of
clay for the male. Using the clay I made for the
female for her use later. That way I don't start out
with one mix, not have enough to finish the body and
end up with a calico person.
Fearless Leader: Susan I see no Type, can you try
again?
Susan: sorry, I hit wrong button
marlea_anderson: so far so good- I'm in and out
Fearless Leader: ok, good, sometimes we type and we
can't be seen
Susan: I got out of work early so I am home in time
for some clay play!
Fearless Leader:
Biz-Archive/Sculpt/AluminumFoil/Armature-001
Fearless Leader: this is what we did just now.
Susan: Good to ee you NJ!
Susan: and you're building people...oboy
Fearless Leader: and I'm going to chop up some white
and burnt umber for a skin clay.
Fearless Leader: Waving at you Susan
Susan: LOVE the shirt! and the wave
Fearless Leader: I'm wrapped up like a Christmas
Present with this shirt of my sister
Shannon: oops I missed Mom leaving :-(
Fearless Leader: can't leave this shirt out at night,
it's so loud it'll keep a body awake
Susan: lol
Kat Indpls IN (kgedrich) joined the room
Fearless Leader: ok, so I'll toss white and burnt
umber into the food processor and make some new skin.
Hey Kat
Kat Indpls IN: hi NJ
Shannon: hi Kat
Kat Indpls IN: hi Shannon
miss_meme_30 left the room
Fearless Leader: we'll use more burnt umber with this
second batch of skin clay
Susan: looks like aotmeal coo
Susan: oatmeal cookie dough
Fearless Leader: so the male will have a tan
Susan: will he have tan lines??
Shannon: LOL
Fearless Leader: lol
miss_meme_30 joined the room
Rossija: WB Missy!
rjchase222: Missy u r back!!!!!!!!!!
minimadness423: NJ when you have a chance...send me
another invite...the stupid ad at the bottom went
wonky and my chat window is less than a line tall
minimadness423 left the room
minimadness423 joined the room
rjchase222: I'm glad I'm not the only one whose ad at
the bottom went wacky!!!
Shannon: weird!
Fearless Leader: Did it help going out and coming back
in?
miss_meme_30: dang yahell
minimadness423: this thing has been wonky sinc the ice
storm came through. fortunately, we didn't get much
ice on the lines...our line stayted up but a main one
in did and no Internet for about 6 hours
Kat Indpls IN: was it that callwave one
Rossija: OOOh, it's a whole 4 degrees outside here!
Rossija: :-D
rjchase222: OOOOOOOOOOOO thats to cold for me!!!!!!!!!
Fearless Leader: 4 degrees, I'm such a weather whimp.
I have windows upen
Fearless Leader: open too
minimadness423: yep....14 here...great for putting a
lid on the boiled custard pot and sitting it out on
the side porch to melt that stubborn spot....GRIN
Rossija: LOL!
minimadness423: Thanks to Bill Gates...its windows
upen
Susan: lol
Kat Indpls IN: 0 zero zilch degrees here and it says
feels like -11
Fearless Leader: it's 51 Degrees here right now in San
Francisco
Shannon: BrrrrrrrGrrrrrrGrowllllll LOL
Rossija: It'll be down to -5 tomorrow morning, but
back into the mid-40s next week.
Fearless Leader: Oh Let's do a roll call please
Fearless Leader: NoraJean, San Francisco
minimadness423: so Kat...what does your weather look
like in Indy...how many inches do you have access to
tonight?
Shannon: oh NJ you big meanie!!!!! LOL
Shannon: <<--West Virginia
Kat Indpls IN: we got 12 inches here on the East side
miss_meme_30: Missy VA
Rossija: Mary, Ohio
Susan: Susan in Ontario, Canada
minimadness423: KathyL, Kentucky
rjchase222: Razma Fallbrook CA
Kat Indpls IN: Kat Indianapolis Indiana frigid and
snowed in
Rossija: Got that beat -- 15 here in central Ohio
Rossija: inches of snow that is
Fearless Leader: what is the temperature in Ontario
canada?
Shannon: you have 15 inches of snow Mary???
Kat Indpls IN: 12 inches yesterday 6 inches under that
minimadness423: Kat...where in IN did they get 31"?
Kat Indpls IN: Columbus Whiteland real bad
marlea_anderson: Marlea, PA
Rossija: Yep. Snowed ALL day Wed. & into Thurs
morning. LEvel 2 snow emergency -- no unnecessary
travel.
Kat Indpls IN: columbus got 2 feet whiteland/brown
county slammed shut
pasadena_cal: Cal and it is supposed to get down to 39
tonight in Altadena.
Shannon: oh wow.... we had a little a couple days ago,
but none on the ground now here in Parkersburg
Fearless Leader: 39 is shirtsleeve weather for some of
these snow bunnies, Cal.
minimadness423: we have cousins who left Melbourn FLA
at 32 degrees and drove to Dayton OH to find 16" of
white this moring. W & Sue said that was better than
hurricanes any time
Rossija: Several counties around Columbus Ohio had
level 3 snow emergencies -- emergency vehicles only,
anoyne else is risking a ticket.
minimadness423: brb
Kat Indpls IN: okay just measured dog its 15 inches
out there, goes to the puppies belly
pasadena_cal: Yah, I have my short sleeved shirt on
with a thin sweater.
Shannon: goodness! the only day that was bad here was
Monday... and it only put the kids schools on a 2 hour
delay... funny how different it can be when we're so
close
Kat Indpls IN: she loves it though, rocky hates it
Rossija: The weather person was joking that the
university students would be in shorts when it gets to
42 next week.
Kat Indpls IN: space heater at feet wrapped in blanket
LOL
Shannon: LOL no doubt Mary! it was like that
yesterday, and it was great! compared to the 15 we had
for a couple days!
rjchase222: I don't miss those days of snow & cold
thats for sure!! :)
Shannon: I don't blame you RJ.... where did you used
to live?
Rossija: It was actually kinda nice to curl up with my
cat & a good book.
rjchase222: Lodi WI !!!!!!!!!
Kat Indpls IN: love winter, at least with cold you can
turn up the heat, start a fire, put on more clothes
you can only go so far when it is hot
Shannon: LOL Mary!
Shannon: ohhhhh RJ... I don't think I could stand it
any farther north than I am...LOL technically I'm in
the south.. just below the mason dixon line... but it
still gets darn cold!!!! ;-)
Kat Indpls IN: I'm from Michigan originally so this is
nothing new to me
Rossija: At leastI still had power. There was 170,000+
in Ohio without electricity.
Fearless Leader: yikes
Shannon: wow... you were lucky Mary!
Kat Indpls IN: one of the reasons i invested in a
generator
Fearless Leader: Man o man, I'm glad we just get the
occasional earthquake
Rossija: I know it! They opened the city rec centers
that had power for folks to get warm.
Shannon: LOL NJ
rjchase222: I know I've gotten used to the weather
here in CA cause when it gets down in the low 50's or
mid 40's I'm cold!!!!! :)
Shannon: wow... sounds like the storm we had here in
the early 90's .... well you probably got that one too
Kat Indpls IN: just turn on only essential appliances
and crank up the wood burning stove
Shannon: LOL you're spoiled RJ ;-)
Rossija: Be careful with the generator, Kat. They
reported that at least 1 person was killed by CO
poisoning from the generator.
Kat Indpls IN: worst storm i can remember is the one
in 1978
Kat Indpls IN: generator is outside
rjchase222: Yep am I am really really glad I am
spoiled! LOL
meplus5kids left the room
meplus5kids joined the room
Shannon: I'm glad for you too! :-*
Fearless Leader: Hey Jean
meplus5kids: lets see if Yahoo will let me stay on for
a while longer
Rossija: Apparently that one in 78 was the previous
worst here, too.
Kat Indpls IN: brother got married on the day of the
1978 blizzard in MI was 23 inches in less then 3 hours

Shannon: NJ, when you wrap like that, what do you do
to keep air bubbles out?
rjchase222: Now I suppose I am going to have to make a
male & a female jester! LOL
Kat Indpls IN: something like 27 inches and her in a
hoop skirt wedding dress
Shannon: oh my goodness Kat!!!
Rossija: yikes!
Shannon: great idea RJ!
Fearless Leader: Oh air bubbles
Fearless Leader: hmmm
Kat Indpls IN: yep fell right into a snow drift and up
went the skirt ROFLMAO
Susan: bubbles
Shannon: LOLOLOL
Rossija: LOLOL
Fearless Leader: if I find them then I pop them, but
after wrapping I compress going from top to bottom,
easing out air
Shannon: you mean, by sort of rolling between your
hands?
Kat Indpls IN: think bro should have known that
marriage wasnt going to last, locked keys to car in
garage, had to break into his own garage, then he had
to get someone to come plow him out, wedding hours
delayed
Shannon: oh I see.... you have more than one layer of
clay in that roll on his leg.... I thought they just
connected then stopped...
Rossija: not an auspicious start, huh, Kat?
Kat Indpls IN: band couldnt make it to the reception
Kat Indpls IN: Dad and I had above 100 degree
temperatures
Kat Indpls IN: nope marriage lasted exactly 1 yr 2
days
Shannon: awwwwwwww :-(
Kat Indpls IN: he's been married now to the same woman
for 20 yrs so glad that one didn't make it
meplus5kids: Gee NJ, that looks like the ex
Shannon: NJ, I don't know if all machines are
different, but what number did you roll that on?
Fearless Leader: now when we add leaf shapes to the
male we focus on building the upper body, more
shoulders, thicker chest, narrow waist and hips
Fearless Leader: The widest setting Shannon
Kat Indpls IN: This sister in law is a sweet person
Shannon: ok
Shannon: that's wonderful Kat!
Fearless Leader: looks like James, he's skinny
Shannon: LOL
Kat Indpls IN: yep, at least one of us got the
marriage thing right LOL
Fearless Leader: ok, who had collar bone issues?
Fearless Leader: I got a trick for instant collar
bones
rjchase222: I have a question concerning widest etc..
Does wide equal thick?
Kat Indpls IN: only that mine hurts LOL
Fearless Leader: LOL, Kat
Shannon: yes RJ
Fearless Leader: don't stress the thickness, just use
what ever is thickest on your machine, if you don't
have a machine just mash clay on the armature.
rjchase222: Thanks I thot it did but then
again.................... :)
Susan: collar bones - do you carve them in??
Kat Indpls IN: hey dad always said i was made like a
shit brickhouse didn't tell me it meant sore shoulders
and all
Fearless Leader: Ok, here's the trick of collar bones,
don't use the whole leaf cutter, go to the edge of the
clay with the widest part of the leaf and then cut.
I'll show you
Shannon: LOL
Fearless Leader: there's your collar bone ledge
Kat Indpls IN: mom was a petite 5' I'm 5' 9'
Kat Indpls IN: oops "
Kat Indpls IN: grams was only 4' 7" LOL
Fearless Leader: now I'll add more leaf shapes and
build up this guy
Fearless Leader: smaller leaves for the shoulder cups
Shannon: I"m gonna have a daughter like that Kat...
I'm 5... she's already 5'4"
Jmouse: I need to get some of those larger leaf shapes
Shannon: me too Jmouse
Kat Indpls IN: this part always reminds me of that
clear body model you know the one with the innards in
it
Shannon: so far, I'm cutting out with my pocket
knife...LOL
meplus5kids: Any recommendations on cutters? I'm
buying me a birthday present after Christmas!
marlea_anderson: cool- I have those cutters too so
I'll try that
Jmouse: smile..
Shannon: the kemper cutters are what everyone seems to
like
Fearless Leader: Kemper, and I use leaf, circle the
most
marlea_anderson: yes Kat- the visible man or
something- I still have my mom's
Kat Indpls IN: think i'm in trouble myself son is
already in a size 12 shoe and is almost level with me,
half brother is 6' 6"
meplus5kids: I know Karen has those. I'm going
shopping next week.
Jmouse: I have the smaller Kemper cutters
Susan: I've got the visible woman somewhere in storage
Shannon: Wow!!! Kat!!
Fearless Leader: now sometimes I take the leaf shape
and elongate it, for the forearm for example
Susan: gotta pull it out and use for a model
Kat Indpls IN: always thought those models were cool,
if you could get the parts back in right LOL
rossija9 left the room
Shannon: good idea Susan!
Kat Indpls IN: yeah we grow them long and tall here
LOL
Rossija (rossija9) joined the room
Susan: I think mine has an add-on - for pregnancy!
Kat Indpls IN: to bad he doesn't like basketball
Shannon: LOL
Shannon: really!!!
Kat Indpls IN: that would be cool Susan
marlea_anderson: I'll have to look at all the inside
goodies in that model
marlea_anderson: oh cool susan
Kat Indpls IN: hmmm wonder if they still make those
things would be cool to do the innards out of polymer
clay
Shannon: we're gonna be seeing some weird figures from
Marlea.... ;-)
Shannon: yes they do.... I've seen them in toy and
craft/hobby stores Kat
Kat Indpls IN: cool soon as the snow is cleared i'm
looking for one, got something in mind for son
marlea_anderson:
http://www.playthingspast.com/ch-74622.html
Fearless Leader: now for rib cage, use a partial leaf
shape and use the straight edge along the spine, then
wrap the rest of the leaf around to the front
marlea_anderson: looks like they run about $20
Shannon: LOL you might be able to find pics on an
anatomy website though
Kat Indpls IN: no i want him to help build the pieces
he's taking biology
Shannon: ohhhhhhh
marlea_anderson: ohhh, i see
meplus5kids: Wish I had thought about that when I was
in pre-nurshing taking anatomy 1 and 2
Shannon: NJ, how long, or how many times do you
usually bake your figures this size?
Fearless Leader: It depends, Shannon. A number of
times depending on what I use for clothing, if I add
color for the face, do TLS hair
Kat Indpls IN: hm bro asked me what to get Daniel for
xmas he's coming up from Virginia next week now i got
an idea of what to get him
Fearless Leader: After the first curing the figure
usually had clothing, let me show you the Monk, he is
at the first cure stage
Shannon: do you do a rough guess on how thick it is
and bake that length of time?
Susan: so...you cure/bake the figures more thanonce,
NJ?
Shannon: how long did you do him? just 20 minutes or
so?
Fearless Leader: Yes, more than once
Susan: ooo monk is cool!
Fearless Leader: half hour if I remember to take them
out on time
Fearless Leader: half hour for each additional curing
Fearless Leader: now he might get some TLS hair
Shannon: Susan, baking more than once for short times
helps keep from getting burnt
Fearless Leader: he might get some color, he needs
eyes
Fearless Leader: all these will be separate curings
Shannon: oh ok.... so with adding things, he gets
cured all the way through... gotcha
Fearless Leader: also after the first cure you can
start to file. I'll get a link about filing faces
Susan: thanks
Shannon: yw
Fearless Leader:
Biz-Archive/Sculpt/FileFaces/Intro
Fearless Leader: the first curing is rough draft
Fearless Leader: like this monk here
Shannon: the first figures I made, I baked them for a
long time... and they burnt... I'd have to paint
them.... didn't realize you could bake several
times... cooling completely in between
analog_ed2001 left the room
minimadness423 left the room
Fearless Leader: then I'll file his face, go over the
file marks with TLS and skin clay mixed like Cover
Girl make up
Shannon: LOL no way!!!
Shannon: I thought you said "mixed WITH".....
ok....LOL
Shannon: ok, so very thin consistancy....
Fearless Leader: add some eyes and they will be raw
clay, add eyelids, some color to his cheeks. All the
while putting him back in the oven for each new raw
layer laid over raw
Fearless Leader: let me get you the link for TLS make
up
Fearless Leader:
Biz-Archive/Sculpt/TLSMakeUp/Index
Fearless Leader: it's an under utilized trick
Shannon: I did that with my cheerleaders eyes! I was
so happy how they turned out!
Shannon: and her cheeks too
Fearless Leader: mix skin clay with Translucent Liquid
Sculpey, make it the same consistency as face make up,
and go over the file marks
Shannon: you actually use a file?
Fearless Leader: add color to the mix and you get the
blush of the cheek, or eyebrows that are raised in
volume. Want to see the file in action, Shannon?
Shannon: sure!
Fearless Leader: I'll get a link for a close up of
these files, they are jeweler's files, you can use
wood carving tools, wood rasps and the like too.
Shannon: I have some large wood carving tools.... fine
sandpaper would work too, no?
Fearless Leader:
Biz-Archive/LEXX-Home/POF-Hand-Group-1Thm
Fearless Leader: this is a fun web section Prince of
Fire gets a hand
Fearless Leader:
Biz-Archive/LEXX-Home/POF-Hand-Group-2Thm
Fearless Leader: let me know when you're ready to see
the file in action
Shannon: I"m ready anytime you are!
Shannon: that's really neat! I haven't tried doing
that... what happens if you only use tls over the
filed part?
Fearless Leader: TLS without clay skin color looks
icky
Fearless Leader: like white blood cells dried
Fearless Leader: ick
Susan: good to know
Shannon: ohhhhh.... ok!
Shannon: thanks for showing me that! do you have to
rinse it after filing, or just apply the tls mix?
minimadness423 joined the room
Shannon: wb minimadness!
Fearless Leader: Ok, this MerCouple needs filing
Fearless Leader: they are First Cure and in rough
draft
minimadness423: Yahoo scrooged me
Shannon: LOL
marlea_anderson: aww they're sweet
Fearless Leader: but before they got their Tails, they
had legs, feet, the whole lower body. Then they got
tail covers, it makes your merfolks be more
proportionate, which most Mermaids are not.
minimadness423: without even a bah-humbug warning
Fearless Leader: and you can pose them in different
ways these two
minimadness423: I got something for their
stocking...Gizmo gave us two niiice furballs this
evening
Shannon: woohoo Yahoooooooo
Fearless Leader: or, we can turn them in another
direction
Fearless Leader: or
Susan: love the muscles on their backs - cool detail
Fearless Leader: Their hair is TLS and Premo Pearl
Green, mixed like whipped cream and slathered on
marlea_anderson: oh by the way folks- i finally
watched farscape last night- it was pretty neat
Susan: slathered and backed?
Susan: baked
Fearless Leader: yes
Fearless Leader: maybe they are second cure
Fearless Leader: must be, they were bald with the
first curing
Shannon: did you bake them together like that?
marlea_anderson: brb
Fearless Leader: yes, they were cured together, but
propped up with a toilet paper roller
Shannon: ahhhhh
Fearless Leader: but they need filing still
Shannon: yikes! he was looking at me while kissing
her!!! LOL
Susan: LOL
Kat Indpls IN: well its midnight and Santa ain't
coming if i don't get to bed, so goodnight all and
hope to see you tomorrow if not may you all have a
Joyous Holiday
Shannon: same to you Kat! Nite!
meplus5kids: NJ, do you have a site on making hands? I
know I've looked, but I can't remember.
Fearless Leader: they are almost kissing
meplus5kids: Goodnite Kat, Merry Christmas
Fearless Leader: not quite
Rossija: Goodnight, Kat!
Fearless Leader: Merry Christmas Kat
Fearless Leader:
Biz-Archive/LEXX-Home/POF-Hand-Group-Thm
Kat Indpls IN:
*************************poof*******************jingle
bells jingle bells jingle all the way zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Fearless Leader: there's a man's hand
meplus5kids: Thanks.
kgedrich left the room
Fearless Leader: and there's been demos with hands,
let me find the link
rjchase222: Well I'm taking this body to bed cause the
brain is on overload & the body is sinking. Besides
Santa has to come!!!!! Merry Christmas to ya all!! :)
Shannon: yes, my epson folder has a hand tut album...
meplus5kids: Night Jean
Fearless Leader: 11-19-04: Screen shots from the Demo
on sculpting a hand. Thank you Shannon for shooting
the shots.
Rossija: Goodnight, Razma! Merry Christmas!
Shannon: you are welcome!
Fearless Leader: Nighty Night Razma
Shannon: nite RJ!
rjchase222 left the room
meplus5kids: Sorry, RJ
meplus5kids: Nite
meplus5kids: Thanks NJ. I've read so many tutes they
are starting to run together
Fearless Leader:
http://www.norajean.com/Avi/Shannon/handsmovie.avi
Fearless Leader: here's Shannon's Avi of sculpting a
hand
Shannon: the avi goes really fast.... LOL
Fearless Leader: Oh just ask, I know there's a lot of
tutes, so ask when you can't find them. I don't mind
Fearless Leader: It's the KeyStone Kops sculpting a
hand
meplus5kids: Gotta look at that one, need a laugh
Shannon: here's mine too... if it helps...
http://albums.photo.epson.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=4257157&a=31516448&f=
Fearless Leader: But what I'm making a point here is
the first cure doesn't have to be perfect
meplus5kids: Gotta get a notebook and write this down,
ran out of paper
Fearless Leader: close is good enough
Shannon: LOL
Susan: that's encouraging NJ
Shannon: oh but I'm such a perfectionist.....LOL
Fearless Leader: Right click on the chat log, select
all, copy, then paste into an email to yourself
mejbym left the room
Fearless Leader: Perfect comes with multiple curing,
filing, adding raw clay, cure again, sand a bit,
fiddle with it
meplus5kids: Thanks, let me try that.
Fearless Leader: but the FIRST cure, doesn't have to
be perfect
Shannon: I'll have to remember that NJ
Fearless Leader: I should save log and go out and come
back in too, The Top of the Hour Break, folks
